Manchester started its life back in 1910 when Louis Paulhan landed his Farman biplane in a field near Burnage, claiming the £10,000 Daily Mail prize as the first man to fly from London to Manchester.

Barton Aerodrome was to prove a totally unsuitable location built on boggy terrain, the grass airfield was considered unsuitable for larger aircraft. especially after heavy rain the runway became waterlogged. Manchester city council decided that improvements would be prohibitively expensive, so land at Ringway, South of Manchester, was earmarked for the new manchester airport which is now known as Ringway Airport.
